Elections Settle TCHOA Membership for September 1

Two incumbents held off challenges in the County General Election to secure their tenure as heads of their respective departments. Dennis Ferguson of Roane County has held the office since 2012 and won another four-year term. Kerry Cagle, who was appointed in 2023 to fill an unexpired term, will fill out the remaining two years before facing election to a full four-year term in 2026.

The remaining open seat on the ballot last week was in Overton County, where incumbent James Norrod is retiring. Tim Kennedy won that three-way race for a full term, taking office on September 1. Others on the ballot on August 1 were unopposed, including:

  • Carter County: Shannon Burchette, appointed incumbent unopposed
  • Cheatham County: Robert ‘Bob’ Binkley, unopposed candidate
  • Giles County: Gene Barnickle, unopposed candidate
  • Hamblen County: Jeff Wisecarver, unopposed candidate
  • Jefferson County: Joe Patterson, unopposed candidate
  • Macon County: Ben Cook, unopposed candidate
  • Marion County: Cory Pickett, appointed incumbent unopposed
  • Maury County: Ken McKee, unopposed candidate
  • Rhea County: Rick Wilkey, appointed incumbent unopposed
Based on last week's results, there are 10 newly elected highway officials in total.

Now that the election is complete, TCHOA will focus on the County Officials Orientation Program, which will be held August 20-23, 2024, at the Hilton Franklin Cool Springs. The event is coordinated by the UT County Technical Assistance Service and is open to all highway officials, particularly those new to the office.

The hotel is extending the room block deadline to August 6, 2024.

2024 County Officials Orientation Program

UT County Technical Assistance Service (CTAS) is holding an orientation program for highway officials and assessors from August 20 to 22, 2024, at the Hilton Franklin Cool Springs. TCHOA will once again partner with CTAS to provide the program, which also includes a membership meeting on the morning of August 22.

In addition to those newly elected in the August county general election, incumbent officials are urged to participate, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. Several members who have not had the opportunity to attend an orientation in the past are also asked to attend the entire three-day event. This is a great time to welcome our new colleagues to the TCHOA Family.

Program details are still being finalized. Lodging and location information can be found on the CTAS website.

Please reach out to any newly elected officials and ask them to join us for what is always a great opportunity to learn and network with their highway official colleagues from across the state.
