TCSA Board Nominations Now Open

Interested in serving in the leadership of TCSA? There are opportunities this fall for you to get involved and serve your association. TCSA's nominating committee will be reviewing applicants and making recommendations during the fall conference for openings on the board.

The nominating committee meets on Wednesday, October 18th, at the fall conference and will review candidates for the following positions.

There will be three openings for board members. Each of these positions will serve a three-year term. The openings are for:
  • an East Tennessee County Commissioner
  • a Middle Tennessee Highway Superintendent 
  • a West Tennessee County Mayor 
In addition, the association will be electing a second vice president. This position follows a rotation. For the upcoming year, the second vice president is scheduled to be a county commissioner from West Tennessee. 

The nominating committee also makes a recommendation for the Tennessee delegate to the NACo board.

These positions are all then voted on by the full membership at the fall conference. To be considered for a position, an official's county must be current in their dues to the association.

Speakers Announce Task Force to look into Rejecting Federal Education Money 

House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) and his Senate counterpart Randy McNally (R-Oak Ridge) have named a 10-member task force to look into the feasibility of rejecting federal education funding in Tennessee.

Rep. Debra Moody (R-Covington) and Sen. Jon Lundberg (R-Bristol) will serve as co-chairs.

TCSA County Success Story Nominations Available

The deadline to submit county success story nominations is October 10, 2023.  
To be considered for a County Success Story award, the project or achievement could demonstrate the following:
• an innovative solution to a problem or a sustained pattern of excellence in governance
• a best practice that increased efficiency in the delivery of county services or resulted in significant savings to taxpayers
• a new approach or the use of new technology to deliver services
OR
• Improved cooperation or coordination between county offices or local governments that resulted in enhanced delivery of services.

Gov. Lee Champions Multi-Agency Law Enforcement Training Academy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On Wednesday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee celebrated the groundbreaking on a Multi-Agency Law Enforcement Training Academy (MALETA) at Cockrill Bend in Nashville.

The $415 million campus will include training facilities for state and local law enforcement, housing and dining for cadets and in-service staff, and a new administrative headquarters building for the Tennessee Department of Correction and the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. The vast majority of law enforcement officers across the state will receive training at MALETA.

The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has created new resources that make it easier than ever to quickly view key demographic information about all 95 Tennessee counties, 342 cities, and 132 state legislative districts.

Tennessee's Unemployment Rate Sets New Record Low in July

Tennessee made history in July when the state recorded its lowest unemployment rate since the federal government began tracking the statistic in 1976. According to the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD), the seasonally adjusted rate of 3.1% was 0.1 of a percentage point lower than the previous all-time low of 3.2%, a figure the state once again reached in June.

The latest Tennessee jobless number was 0.2 of a percentage point lower than the rate in July 2022. Unemployment numbers for the state have been at or below 3.5% since January 2022.

Comptroller's Office Releases July 2023 Revenue Reports

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – [On Tuesday, August 15], Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration Commissioner Jim Bryson announced that Tennessee July revenues were $1.65 billion, which is $153.5 million more than the budgeted estimate and $46.3 million more than the state received in July 2022. The growth rate for July was 2.89 percent.

“July total tax revenues exceeded our budgeted estimates and grew at a modest pace compared to this same time last year,” Bryson said. “Monthly gains were led by sales tax receipts reflecting June consumer activity and corporate tax payments. When combined, all other tax revenues declined compared to July 2022.

First Group Of Offenders Earn College Degree At Riverbend Maximum Security Institution

[Friday, August 11, 2023] - History was made Tuesday evening as five offenders became the first cohort to earn college degrees at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution (RMSI).  Graduating with their Associate of Science in Business Administration from Nashville State Community College, the group joins over 200 other men and women who have earned a college degree behind the walls of a Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) prison.

Through partnerships with over 10 colleges and universities, TDOC offers degree programs across the state that allow offenders the opportunity to earn associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees.

“This is my favorite part of my job,” Rachel Riley-Coe, Assistant Commissioner of Rehabilitative Services, told the graduates. “I believe in the power of education.  With education comes perseverance, with education comes strength, confidence, critical thinking, and dreams of what could be.”

Reminder for the TCSA Fall 2023 Conference and Trade Show Registration

Tennessee County Services Associations (TCSA) has set the dates and location for the annual Fall 2023 Conference and Trade Show. Mark your calendars and plan to join us in Chattanooga on October 18-20th. Major highlights include adopting the Legislative Platform, Board elections, and county vendor services, as well as good exhibits. 

We are still working on finalizing the agenda for the conference and trade show with various breakout sessions, general session speakers, and other educational opportunities at the conference. We hope to have  the agenda of the various events available for everyone over the coming weeks.
